Apologies if this is in the wrong section. Can anyone tell me if there is much of a difference between a 2004 Audi A6 and a 2003 Audi A6. I'm asking because I have a 2004 model (2.5 diesel automatic) and I'm trying to source an automatic gearbox from a breaker yard. I have found one but as its from a 2003 model I dont know if it is suitable. Thank you.

2004 would have been the model changeover between the old model and the newer model. Your model would be known as the C5 whereas the newer model would be the C6. They have totally different engines and may have different versions of the multitronic gearbox. If yours is a 2.5 litre diesel then more than likely it is the C5 because the 2004 C6 would be 2.0 litre and 2.7 litre diesel. You would really want to find the model/serial number of your existing gearbox to make sure the one in the breaker's yard is suitable.

A word of caution though is that those multitronic boxes are very troublesome and you could be buying another troublesome one from a breaker's yard, a reconditioned one while more expensive might be a better investment if you plan to keep the car long term.

Thank you for your reply and your advice. I have checked the code on my gearbox which is GHP. I've spent the day ringing around but no luck. I have received a quote from a breakers yard in the UK but as you say, I might be as well off having the gearbox repaired here at home. My mechanic will ring the yard in the UK tomorrow and chat with them and if they have the proper match then I'll have to decide what to do. At the moment I'm surfing the net for somewhere in Germany that takes end of life Audi cars. My thinking is that surely some Germans have scrapped their old Audi's for newer ones. I'm clutching at straws I suppose.:) Thanks again.

Try some of the gearbox reconditioning companies too. They might have one in stock and will probably offer a warranty on theirs.

Thank you. Perhaps you could answer one other question for me? Do you know if there is any other gearbox code that is compatible with the gearbox code GHP in my car?

Unfortunately I've no idea to be honest, I'm far from being an expert on the matter.

One thing you could do is PM a user here called George Dalton, he has his own garage and is a Audi/VW specialist based near Portlaoise so might be able to help you out.
