Audi A4 (b6) boot won't open

    Hi,

As title says the boot on my Audi A4 (b6) saloon won't open.

When I press the fob I can hear the solonid/motor make a noise
When I press the open/release button on the boot I can also her the solonid/motor.

The boot will not open with the key either which is a nightmare as my golf clubs are in there and I can't get them - boot can't be accessed from the rear seat either.

Any ideas how I get this open????

Could be something caught in the latch when you last closed it.
Sharply press down and immediately pull up on bootlid as someone presses release button.

Ya, the thought crossed my mind. V unusual for the key not to open it.
    Will give that a go.

Perhaps try disconnect the battery or if you can locate the fuse for the boot and then try with the key itself in the lock.

Ya, gave that a go - as in using the Key to open

Key has 3 positions from what I can tell.

Position 1 appears to be the disable position as when the lock is in this position I cannot hear the solonid operate with the fob or the boot lid switch.

Position 2 appears to be the enable position as when the lock is in this position I can hear the solonid operate with the fob or the boot lid switch

Position 3 appears to be the open position which is another 1/8 turn past position 2.

    Boot just won't open

Gave that a go there, no way would it budge. Swinging out of it to be fair:)
Will try as Atlantic Dawn suggested and pull the fuse to see will it open.

Fearing the worst on this one - pulled fuse and still no joy.
I'm guessing the lock is mechanical jammed on the locking latch.

Is there anyway of getting this open considering I can't get into the boot from the back seats:(

This randomly happens on my b6 too, fob doesn't work, button on boot works sometimes, then other times you can hear it work but boot is still jammed...

Key quarter turn anticlockwise opens it when others fail...

The seats not folding or even an access hatch is so annoying with a car that size!

The more I research it the grimmer it is looking.

Would love to know off someone who has an A4 b6 saloon (mine is 02) with no access through the back seats, is there an emergency release in the boot.

It looks like I may have to cut an access hole in the bodywork behind the back seats:mad:

I have a B7 with folding rear seats but a quick google search seems to suggest you can remove the rear headrest guides to get the rear seat back out.

This happened me in passat. Check the release is grounded properly...they have a habit of wire breaking

i had this issue on the drivers door of my a6 which was a nightmare, eventually got it opened by thumping with my fist on the lock, what was causing the problem was water ingress onto grease in the lock assembly causing the dead lock to stick, cleaned it off with wd and a dab of copper grease hadn't any problem since, also press down on the boot lid as you give it a thump, hope this helps.

Try this. Very sharply press down on boot lid with both hands. Then "lock" car with key fob. Now press down sharply on boot again - you should hear a barely audible "ping" in lock mechanism. Now "unlock" with key fob. Attempt to open using key in key slot. The bootlid may need a good pull - dont go crazy - due to the vacuum causes by pushing on the lid.

You may need to repeat this procedure a few times before the "ping" occurs. I had to replace an actuator in mine to resolve this.

Don't consider drilling or cutting as repair/replacement cost will exceed the value of the car.

Folks, tried all methods above to no avail, thanks for the advise!

Spoke with lock doctor and they confirmed as I expected that the boot will have to be drilled to pop open the lock.

    Q.

Does anyone know where to drill this hole (behind the reg I believe) and what to use to pop - procedure or a few pics would be excellent:)

Would rather try this myself and save a few quid if I can as its prob gonna cost a few quid for a new lock and am trying to keep costs relativity low.

    Thanks.

I take it your back seats dont fold?.....is it not a legal requirement that they need to put a manual release inside the boot in case someone get locked in? Or is that a recent thing and car older than that requirement coming in

Agree with you, back seats should fold.Try get into the boot with someone outside, bang the area of the lock with your fist and get the other person to press the fob and try open at same time, had it on a vw golf, kept at it and it worked

    Worth a try anyway.

Sorry just seen your seats dont fold,is there no levers on top corner of each back seat?

Some of these B6 A4's don't have folding seats, there bolted in

Just to close this one out.

A hole (approx 15mm diameter) had to be drilled behind the registration plate to allow a piece of wire get in and flick over the little brass tang on the boot latch - not easy...

The problem was the small plastic bush that connects both the solonid and key operating cables to the brass tang on the boot latch, had worn and popped out - v poor design in fairness as both cables should connect separately to avoid total lock out.

The plastic bush cost €2 from Audi and took 2 minutes to fit once I had the cover off.

Anyone driving one should consider replacing that €2 part as soon as they can as a bit of preventative maintenance.

Or source a nylon or metal bush - even better.

Hey, Did you get this one done yourself. ???.. I am so lost with this. I had the same problem that golf gear was stuck in there. I removed back seats and cut away the small hatch to get shoes out etc. but boot still locked.
Any help appreciated, if you didnt do yourself can you point me in the right direction as I'm pulling my hair out.

    Cheers

Why cut into the boot if you got into the boot from the back seat?
Once in the boot reef off the boot liner and you get sufficient access to the mechanism (on the boot adjacent the lock) to open it - usually.
On my passat the cable had snapped. so replacing it was easy enough once boot was opened.

There's loads of them running around!
I think you can lift the seat up (lift around front left and right cushion) and out.
Seat upright comes out by taking out headrests and headrest guide and someother clip below. Have a google, look for videos, that seems to be the process from what I can see online. My car has the foldy down seats so have no personal experience.

Just seen this, when I got my B6 two years ago and took it to NCT it failed because boot would not open. It worked for me just days before so I tried all key positions, nothing. Turned out that the rubbers just made a really good seal to the lid, and if I pulled on the handle REALLY hard it opened. Happens now and again still.

I know it's not the OPs issue, but just in case it helps someone..
