MF 165 Issue

Well I have an MF 165 which turns over a few times when starting but then just stops suddenly with a thud like the fly wheel jams up or something. A new starter motor didn't solve the issue. Some times unburnt diesel pours out the exhaust (small hole in the bend). It eventually starts after being left alone.

Also she runs grand at idle but struggles to run smooth when given a bit of throttle.

I was going to say that. Sounds serious.

Is the heater for engine connected check this first. It could be issue with injectors leaking diesel into one cylinder to check loosen studs holding injectors and pry them up a little( after tractor being idle for a while) and spin engine with stopper in, if there is diesel in the cylinder it will blow up by injector.it sounds that there is diesel leaking in to one or more cylinders.

Flywheel has wear but not unusual. No tearing noise.

She had this issue with old fuel filters too. I might get the tank off and empty it to see.

I'll check it but it should be connected. Thanks I'll check out the tank first and if nothing try this.

I would be inclined to think that the valve clearances are off or there is an issue with timing if you have unburnt diesel spilling out.. if you are taking off the tank you could check them handy enough..

Sounds like the heater plug is leaking diesel into the cylinders hydrolocking the engine. You might have pull the injectors and turn the engine a few times to remove the diesel and fit a new heater plug

The amount of mechanical knowledge that lads have always amazes me. Just read this thread and I have no idea what most of the engine parts mentioned here might do - never mind where to find them...

You have no option but to get a lad to look at it so i guess.. do let us know what the outcome is!

If you take the heater plug out and can see diesel in the intake you'll know then if it's causing the problem. I had this happen to me before with a 185
