£5k for a second car "runaround"

Moving house shortly, that will make having a second car near enough to a necessity. The car would be used for a ~20mile round trip for commuting, 5 days a week. Wouldn't even be used all 5 days (good days would mean a cycle in as its 8 miles).

I live in the UK. Thinking of a Fiesta or Focus or something of that ilk. Is there anything out there I should consider that might come out of leftfield?

I should add too, by default I've been looking at >5 years, am I excluding some decent options by doing this?

    10 miles. Get a taxi.

It's Edinburgh, it would be cheaper to buy a car.

You could get a nice e39 6cylinder 530i, or a busso 156 for that, in the UK the tax is not as punitive as it is here.

About £200 for the AF, £250 for the 5series I think.
You'd be talking as low as £30 for the smaller cars.
