I'm currently claiming illness benefit. I have a holiday booked in October for a week. Do I need to notify the social welfare? I've read on citizens advice that I can leave the state for up to 4 weeks and still receive payment as long as I keep submitting my certs. How am I supposed to submit my cert if I'm not in the country? I'm on weekly certs.

    Internal Guidelines: Illness Benefit

Payment while on holidays or abroad

In general, a customer travelling to another EEA Member State is entitled to be treated as if they never left the State, regardless of the reason for leaving the State.

However, as the continued issue of payment(s) is dependent on the receipt of medical certificates the customer should notify the Department (where possible) in advance to ensure that payment continues e.g. switched from weekly medical certification to monthly certification.

A customer, who wishes to go to a non-EEA country for health reasons, may be entitled to Illness Benefit for the duration of their absence. While each such case is treated on its own merits, a decision on entitlements to Illness Benefit must take into account such factors as duration of claim at the time the application is received, nature of incapacity and the likely period that is to be spent abroad.

In any event the person must notify the Department in advance of departure and is paid for the period of absence on his/her return. (See Guideline "Absence from the State"

If you are on weekly certs, how do you know you will still be on illness benefit in a month

Well I had to get a form filled in by my GP a while back in regards to being fit to be called for a medical review with social welfare, and under how long is the illness likely to continue he put indefinitely. That's a pretty good indication!
