Train ticket from Munich Airport query

I know there are some people here who live in Munich so a quick question.

Have just booked a ticket online on bahn.de from Munich airport to Schärding in Austria via Passau. It involves getting a bus from the airport to Freising first, and all indications on the website seemed to imply that the bus was included in the price.

On the printed PDF version of the ticket though there's no mention of the bus leg, and the ticket is only valid from Freising to Schärding.

In the bahn.de app if I log in and view my ticket it gives me some warning on the journey itinerary tab that it might not include all legs, e.g. ones by bus, but then goes on to say that it is valid for legs of the journey under the "Handy-Ticket" tab, which does explicitly mention that the ticket is valid from Munich Airport!!

So does anyone here have any experience with getting train tickets from Munich Airport that involve an initial bus journey, and if so does the ticket include that or not?

Likely you will have to pay for the bus, the system has the itinerary but cannot do fare combinations like this.

Its only going to be a few euro to get over to Freising, lovely place, nice beers, was there last week

When I was heading to Nuremberg I got the bus to Freising first. I just showed the train ticket to the driver and he waved me on.

Is the ticket you bought a "Bayern ticket"? (Day ticket for regional trains, busses and city transport systems)
If so then it includes the bus. If not it almost certainly doesn't and it's a plain rail ticket

Any warnings on a ticket or schedule are standard text blocks and can be misleading especially as the English translation can be dodgy enough

That's interesting. I'll try that first. On the ticket on the phone it definitely says München Flughafen - Schärding above the QR code.

It's a simple one-way ticket. Munich Airport is given as a valid starting point for the journey when searching for routes and the bus is explicitly mentioned in the itinerary, so I'd be surprised if it wasn't included. We'll see and I'll report back.

I actually went through the booking process in German (I lived there for 7 years so speak it reasonably well) and the PDF ticket is in German too, but the DB Navigator app on my phone insists on doing everything in English despite setting the language to German, so I can't see what the equivalent message would be in German.

I'll only be there for 9 minutes, and at the station too, so not really enough time to take in the sights :D

Now that you say it I might have had a Bayern ticket... But I do remember thinking I'm definitely chancing my arm with the ticket.

I was only in the station myself and the view from the bus stop made it look like a good place. 9 minutes will give you enough time to get yourself a beer. Decent bottle selection from what I remember. :pac:

according to a quick search on the DB website, the bus from the airport to Freising isn't included. That makes sense as theres no add on possible to a standard rail fare that would allow you to take that bus. I presume your fare is a standard flex ticket for €37.30 just to confirm we are talking about the same ticket. The Airport to Freising is only €2.80 btw, payable to the bus driver or by machine if theres one there at the stop or on the bus.

The alternative is to get a Bayern ticket for the Bavarian stretch of the journey for €25 also covering the bus, plus a separate point to point ticket for €6 for the cross border bit, so €31 rather than €40.10 for the journey including paying for the bus.
Should there be 2 of you a bayern ticket for 2 @€;31 plus 2x €6 singles would be just €43 compared to €80.20. When working it for 3+ people it is cheaper again, per person.

If your original ticket is a standard flex price you can cancel for no (yes, zero) charge and go get a bayern ticket plus a single instead.

Hi munchkin, thanks for that. Yes it is the standard flex fare I have. Only just seen this post and am at the airport now, so I'll just wait and see what happens. 2* €2.80 won't break the bank. I guess if I had a final destination in Germany the site might have suggested the Bayern ticket, but as I was travelling to Austria it didn't.

Did have to pay for the bus tickets after all. No big problem.

To get to Schärding would take at least an hour more via Munich and the alternative is to go Munich Airport - Neufahrn change trains Freising which would take +30 minutes, bus is 10

The DB journey planner is smart enough to suggest use of local bus services when they are a better option
