Thinking of getting train to Dublin this Sunday but was told that would have to change at Athlone and get on Westport train, is this correct?

    Probably not

Go to http://www.irishrail.ie/ and enter Ceannt and Heuston and on next page choose Show Details
Or look for "0 changes" under each result.

    Why not take the bus?
    Express services from city centre:
    http://m.gobus.ie/
    Or
    http://www.citylink.ie/

Be advised you really need to book a seat or no guarantee of a place

All trains are direct except the 8.30am on Sunday which has 1 change and a 4 hour travel time compared to the rest which are around two and a half hourd

Why is it taking that long to go to Dublin are they waiting to hook up with a train from Mayo, never heard of a train change on the Galway to Dublin route before

They do that on a few routes. They show the 'non ideal' options too, I suppose in case people are trying to connect from different places maybe? From my experience the 'awkward' train usually has a regular one leave a half hour either side of it so it isn't serving the main rush.

If it's the 08.30, 17/9, from Galway it is because you will be journeying to Dublin via Limerick. There will be no hook-up with a Mayo train.

Handy info. Thanks for those links! Never knew that. On the road myself today and public transport is a much better option really.
