Can you qualify for JB if you quit your job?

    I'm leaving my current position in a few weeks since I handed in my notice. I've worked in the position for over 2 years.

    I haven't yet got another job lined up as I want to get some personal stuff sorted while I have the spare time, but I plan to sort a job a month or so later.

    Just so I know, am I eligible for JB (or similar) or does this only kick in if you are let go (rather than quit) ?


    I wouldn't qualify for JA.

    The qualifying period for JB when someone has left a job of their own volition is "up to 9 weeks". So if you don't want to be left unpaid for those 9 weeks, then you'll need to convince the DSP that you had a good reason to leave employment and that you're fit for work, available for work, and actively looking for work - so telling them that you have a few personal things to catch up with is not really the best way to go!

    If you can re-phrase that as being bullied, or claim that the job was very stressful and was affecting your sleep/health/love life, then you might get away with it.

    Well if you were very stressed and finding it hard to sleep, eat, relax etc because you were worrying so much - especially if you saw a doctor for the stress it could be seen as reasonable.

    What do I need to bring on the day at the Social welfare office?

    - P45?
    - A few printouts of jobs I've applied for?

    Do I need to book an appointment or just turn up on the morning and queue?

    Turn up and queue! Definitely bring P45.

    As you wouldn't have been eligible for JB until 3 days after you lost your job, earlier job applications aren't really relevant. But bring them along if you like!

    Note that it is used for both JB and JA so, even though you're applying for JB, you need to complete all of it.

    My meeting with Welfare is arranged for tomorrow and just doing some prep work on the reasons I left the job early before securing another position. There are two main reasons I left early...

    - Bullying from a senior staff member

    - Lack of opportunity to up-skill (the job was in IT but the work dealt with 20 year old technology so the market requirements have moved on). I want to spend some time up-skilling so that I have a more competitive advantage in the marketplace and there was no possibility of having the time (or freedom) to do this while working in the job.


    My thinking is that I should avoid mentioning the bullying and just concentrate on the "up-skilling" time, but would that fly as a good reason why I should qualify to receive JB immediately?

    Perhaps I could mention that the "management environment wasn't cohesive to being able to learn new skills". Which is all true.

    I would 100% mention the bullying! Bullying is a very valid reason to leave a job, especially (as others have said above) if it is effecting your mental health, stressing you to the point where you can't sleep, causing you to experience anxiety and panic attacks, etc. No opportunity to up-skill could lead to a lot of questions about why you chose to leave rather than staying there and looking for a different job while still employed, or doing an online/evening course to learn new skills. So if I were you I would focus on the bullying.

    Will further information be requested from the company in question?

    I wouldn't want it to affect my references if they were questioned about it from the Welfare office.

    Also should I mix in the two reasons or just leave "bullying culture" as the only reason?
