Line checker

I'm looking to move house and decent broadband is important. I have entered the address into this Vodafone line checker.

Results were very disappointing: Your line can currently achieve 12mb with the 100mbps broadband plan

I'm wondering, would anyone know could this just mean that the current occupants are signed up to a lower package (12mb or 24mb maybe) and that is the max the line checker can see? Or is it bad news, the line is rubbish?

It could indicate that the house is almost 2kms from a cabinet or exchange

FTTC/VDSL (up to 100 Mbps) speed vs. distance

Thanks. 0.4km away according to the fiber rollout map There's actually a closer cabinet too at 0.2km, not sure if you can request a change of cabinet?

So technically it should be getting decent speeds. Should I trust the chart or the Vodafone line checker? Where did you get that chart btw?

If you Google adsl/vdsl speed vs line distance you'll find plenty such charts.

As far as I'm aware Vodafone access that information from OpenEir database so might be best to deal with them first as regards getting concrete info on exchange/line distance/ line check etc. I know they can be painful but if your call lands at an experienced technicians desk they can be really helpful as has been my experience with a similar issue. (Sorry should say Eir as OpenEir might not field calls from mere mortals but I could be wrong). My dealings with them was before the Eir/OpenEir split

    Closest means nothing unfortunately.

Your cable routes via the cabinet or exchange that suited the techs when main cables were originally laid. This may have been in the 70's.

Is the exchange perhaps 1500m ish from you?

The Vodaphone line checker used to tell me I could get an up to 24 meg service, now it tells me I'm eligible for an up to 100 meg service with a line speed of 0 megs!

I presume this is because my line is now fiber instead of copper and Vodaphone don't resell OpenEir's FTTH.

Yeah, I think Eir/OpenEir have the most accurate line info. I've a 1.7Mbps DSL for 10 years with Eir but at 7km from exchange. Any time I've tried to change providers (either online or over the phone) they tell me that my line won't support broadband at all. Yet an Eir check will show that up to 2Mbps is available.

Your line would be considered Amber. It gets a rating, but its "we're rating this with a huge handful of salt" kinda thing.

Unfortunately, as ED E posted above, just because there is a cabinet nearby doesn't mean you're necessarily connected to it and the actual line length could be as the checker indicates taking the long route back to the original exchange. And, no, they won't move it to the nearest cabinet.

The chart, btw, is from the open-eir website.

Ok thanks guys. I'm going to take the line checker for its word so. So frustrating, as if finding a house isn't hard enough.

Ok so I've found an Eir line checker here which tells me it can get FTTH 1,000mb broadband.

This makes more sense as I know it is in a FTTH area and it is very close to the exchange. So my conclusion is the Vodafone line checker probably can only see the last package that was available on that line. The house is probably a long time Virgin customer and their last Eir line broadband was a 12mb package back in the day.

All else fails, they do have Virgin available

if Virgin Media is available go with them, they are cheaper, they are fast and there is no fair usage policy/caps to worry about.
