Does anyone make decent money off their blog?

I'm getting a blog up and running at the moment. It's mainly for documentation purposes but I'm going to market it on twitter and on social media platforms, on the chance I get contacted for sponsored posts and the like.

Does anyone make decent money off their blog? I was doing some research and some 20 year old college student makes between 2 - 4K a months from affiliatie marketing, and sponsored posts. One of her payments was 2K laptop from dell to talk about the laptop, and she isn't even a tech reviewer.

It depends on your content and how many readers you have. You need to be able to show your numbers before people will start paying. Most paid collaborations come about by the blogger asking the company to pay them as well.

I wouldn't imagine your college notes would get much readers TBH.
Like the previous poster has said it's all about the content, if it's good enough you'll make money

What country is this in? The Irish market seems very oversaturated.

If it's decent content without a specific focus that only appeal to Irish people that's shouldn't be a problem. I follow about 2 Irish bloggers. The rest are international.

It's a bit like football, some very few make silly money, but the vast majority of people that kick a ball around do it for the enjoyment of participating.

I think no matter what your content - as long as there is a market for it - would take off as long as you put the time in. To me, that means not having a job and being able to go at it full time. I look after social media for one company, and I never thought it would be so time consuming - a facebook post here, likes there, linkedin update there, twitter searches etc. If you have the time to put the hard work in, you might have a chance.

I'll echo the above, to make it work and have some sort of income requires a lot of dedication. A lot of people seem to think that a couple of Instagram / Twitter posts will get the worlds attention. It doesn't, and promoting your site, publishing very fequent (Relevant) articles, interacting with other relevant bloggers and reaching out to potential visitors is a full time job.
I gave it a good whack with a travel blog and while in the beginning I could dedicate time, once I started working full time I found less time to blog and therefore less time to promote, write and respond. In the end I was getting 10k visitors per month which to me was great but which was a drop in the ocean when it comes to the oversaturated travel blogging market. I couldn't keep up the constant social media demands and so I called it a day.

It depends on the market. My 19 year old son has over 1 million visits per month and has made about $500 from his Facebook sites (slightly under 200,000 followers). He could monetise it more but doesn't want to sell out and works within the area of sci-fi and anime. He has a YouTube channel and receives $40 pcm for traffic.

By comparison my daughter 20year old has fashion blog on instagram as well as a word press blog with slightly less than 10,000 followers, and she is getting quite a lot of free stuff from companies from bueaty products to mobile phone accessories etc.

Her friend has a fashion blog on instagram with over 1.5 million followers- she is now based full time in London, travels regularly around the world paid for by companies, and charges an absolute fortune for product placements. Her phone is in use 24/7 and she's a total narcissistic, vacuous spanner.

Anyway you could PM me the blogs?

Lots of blogs are linked to a Patreon page/account, so their followers can contribute a set dollar amount per month to the blogger. They choose amount, could be a dollar could be 5 could be ten. If you even take 1000 out of the 1.5 million followers who give 5 dollars a month through Patreon it's 5k a month income.
I know a girl who does that, she hikes and video blogs, she makes over 8k a month as 1000's of her followers people will donate a dollar a month at least to her.
