    Hi,

Im looking to get TVR's fitted to 3 radiators in bedrooms. Can anyone advice me of the labour costs to this?
also would it be worth doing this job myself?
    thanks

The cost would be in the region of €160 --€220
As heating system has to be drained down valves changed refilled vented and inhibitor added

If it is a house and rads are upstairs you can turn off the cold feed from F&E tank (and the heating electrical supply).
Check the valves are the same fitting as modern ones will have the same connection. If they are really old you need to remove the stub in the bottom of the rads and replace with the new one supplied. You need a simple hex key to do this. It may be worth just getting new rads if they are very old inefficient/rusty ones. Beware of twisting the pipes if the fittings are really old and stuck on the pipes.Try loosening the nut below the valve and see if it is free before starting. Remember if you don't want to replace the old pipe union nuts these will not be new but will match the old nuts on the lock shield valves anyway.
Close off the rads you are not touching so these keep their water. In a bungalow you need to close off all the rads and the boiler etc. to avoid draining all the system. You will have to drain all the supply pipes to the level of the rads you are changing valves on.
Crack the joints on the valves you want to change and drain until water stops. Make sure the valves are open so the pipes above are empty! You are only draining the 3 rads you need to upstairs and the water in the supply pipes from the F&E tank. Replace valves with TRV's. Re do connections after cleaning joints and a tiny smear of Boss white etc. Tighten valve joints. Test first by just opening feed pipe only so you not filling the rads. If no leaks open each rad in turn checking for any drips and bleed of course. If you want to add inhibitor you can do so into an empty rad prior to refilling.
Turn on the power supply and bring the system to temperature and check for leaks.
If you are reasonably competent at basic plumbing this is not a difficult job. Worse case scenario is you have to cut the rad feed pipe and fit new nuts and possibly extend pipe with a neat soldered joint.

    Thanks FreddyUK

Im not gona do this job myself as i dont understand enough about plumbing. I got a quote for 120euro for TRV's on three rads so i think i'll go with that - this does not include the TRV's themselves but i think i'll buy these on screwfix, do i need to buy the lockshield too? I probably will as they are only 2 euro extra.
