Register online on the companies registration office website. If you are having difficulty a friend of mine specialises in company formations if you want his details I can pm you.

If he is currently unemployed he can get help from the Intreo centre who should have a referral to a localised community partnership.

Those guys can have a 1 to 1 meeting with him and do up the paperwork in a face to face meeting.

They do up the forms for the CRO and register for VAT. They might even offer some kind of financial support for the initial setup.

Even if he's not unemployed they should be able to point him in the right area.

It's quite common these days as people are setting up businesses as they become contractors in trades and the like.

Local enterprise office is a good place also. I found them a great help.

Business section here on boards is also a great place to ask questions.

    Best of luck with it.

I think it's about 150 and it includes CRO fees which you would have to pay anyway. There is a bit in it alright if he doesn't know where to start.

I'd definitely pop into the local enterprise office before making any commitments.

He may not need to set up a company and might just need to operate as a sole trader. Either way they should be able to point him in the right direction.

    Best of luck

I think bmwguy is getting a bit ahead of himself....There's generally no advantage to registering a limited company at startup...it just adds to red tape and involves expenditure that could be better used. If the business takes off he can do it then when there's cash flow.

In the meantime, there's nothing to stop him trading as a sole trader. He doesn't have to register anything at the CRO as a sole trader unless he's using a business name, and that just costs €20 if he does it online.

His only obligation as far as registration is concerned is with Revenue. He is obliged to register for Income Tax. He doesn't have to register for VAT unless his turnover is over €37,500 if it's a service business or €75,000 if he sells goods.

At this point, the best advice I could give is that he goes and has a chat with an accountant.

Just register as a business name.

Eg ladyindarkson t/a "business name" - costs about €20

Registering as a ltd company brings huge amount of paperwork and regulatory filing.

I'd also advise talking to an accountant - most will give initial advice free.
