Can husband apply for mortgage if property in my name ?

We plan to build an extension onto my uncles existing house which he is signing over to me ... I'm just wondering would we be better off getting my husbands name on it to as he is the higher earner so needed for the mortgage or can we apply for a mortgage in both names if only one is on the property ?
