Painting side gate

I've a wooden side gate that I painted recently with some paint I got from Lidl, gave it a few coats. Sometimes the gate is held open by a stone, and the stone has scrapped the paint off - I expected the paint to be a bit stronger! Is there anything I could apply to the bottom of the gate that is a bit stronger?

    Oil based exterior paint.

Thanks, should I just apply an overcoat of oil based paint on top of the paint I just put on? Or would I need an undercoat?

I would try and scrape and/or sand 40 grit paper off as much of the previous paint as possible. Then apply an oil undercoat and then an oil gloss. Gloss is more hard wearing. Sorry to tell you that you have a lot of work to do!

Oh, I just applied about 3 coats of the new (water based) paint :( ...what's the risk with leaving it on? The oil based paint will not hold as well?

The first coat is the most important. If that doesn't adhere to the wood, no matter what you put on top of it it will still scratch off. To test this, can you scrape off the paint you put on with your nail? If not, and it's a wooden gate, I would proceed with an oil satin. If it's metal, then I'd put on oil undercoat and then gloss.
