Why are doctors in favour of GRS?

Why do so many doctors advise patients who have gender dysphoria, which is a psychological condition, to undergo gender reassignment surgery (GRS)?

I cannot understand the recommendation in favour of serious surgery for a mental health issue.

For example, transgender media personality Lauren Harries (formerly James Charles Harries), as a child, displayed feminine mannerisms and so was taken to a doctor.

If a boy has feminine mannerisms, then that means that he is gay - society stopped being against homosexuality a long time ago.

Have you ever considered the possibility that you don't know as much about what you're talking about as you think you know?

OP, I really don't see what you and hoping to achieve here in this forum with this query.

    Please be aware that the forum charter (here) specifically says;
    8. Abusive language that is homophobic/transphobic will not be tolerated and the persons posting it will be banned from the forum. Saying that transgender is a choice, saying that trans surgeries are cosmetic, or calling trans people "a man/woman who thinks they are a woman/man ", will result in an immediate infraction and/or ban, as these things aren't "opinions", they are falsehoods rooted in transphobia.

If you are not a medical doctor or a psychologist I severely doubt you have the knowledge and insight to refute the claims of the medical profession when it comes to trans issues.

It's not as simple as that now is it

I only chose this forum because I thought it specifically relevant.

With respect, I didn't use any of the words in your quote from the charter.

At the end of the day, I'm new to this thread.

You came very close, insinuating that a "Men with feminine mannerisms" are gay (point blank) and dismissing the idea of being transgender.

We necessarily take a strong stance on these issues because this forum in particular in designed to be place where posters identities are not trivialised or discussed as a topic of "interest". This is life for many people here and that is why we have a heavily moderated forum.

I don't know why you saying so many doctors advise patients to undergo it. How many doctors have you asked about this?

Have you every asked yourself why do trans people go to these doctors in the first place? A lot of trans people undergo this surgery, as it is want they want. No is forced to undergo this surgery (well in the Western World). People get it done. It is not something taken lightly. It is not uncommon for patients to be referred to therapy etc before it.

You might not understand why doctors recommend it. However, if you do a bit more / some research on trans people and why they get this surgery done, you might understand it...

I'll be honest OP, your lead on this thread comes across as very anti trans*, and is overly simplistic.

Yes, a man with feminine mannerisms may be gay. Equally they may be straight, or trans* or hundreds of other things. There is no one size fits all.

On Gender Dysphoria being a psychological condition - this was once the case. It was at the time called Gender Identity Disorder, a term which is no longer used, as it is no longer considered a mental disorder. It is still diagnosed by a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist, though this is a legacy thing. It is treated as a physical condition where the body does not match the mind (not the other way round) by an endocrinologist, and if desired by the patient, Gender Confirmation Surgery. Not all trans* people go for the surgery though.

I hope this is helpful, and I would be glad to answer any other questions you have in a positive way.

Oh my God, I am truly lost for words.

Sexual preference and identity has nothing to do with gender identity. Anyways, labels are irrelevant and we all have mannerisms which make each of us individual.
