How old do a tree have to be to be a protected tree?

As title wondering what age does a tree have to be before it's a protected one. A neighbour down the road is gone insane cutting down old oak and beech trees. My grandparents can remember them trees when they grew up so they are 100 years anyway.

Thanks for that, I wouldn't define his place as a forest. It's an old estate. I'll give them an email anyway.
