Swimming Lessons

    Hi guys, new to all this, I have just decided to start training for a tri next year. The problem is I cant swim. I can swim 1/2 lengths at a push but am having to stop and take breath before going again. I was told I need to get lessons! Any advice on someone south Dublin/ Wicklow area? I dont know if just pool lessons are what I need or Tri specific coaching? Thanks

    Check out any local tri clubs - now would be the idea time to join up with a tri club as sessions are likely much quieter so more time for a coach to spend with you.


    South Dublin / Wicklow would have Wicklow Tri/Belpark/Pulse

    The National Aquatic Centre do swim lessons, might be good to get you started and then go to club sessions. Clondalkin swimming pool too if that's closer

    Belpark have a new to tri programme starting in January, over 20 took part last year. But would start swimming in advance of this.

    I learned at the swan in Rathmines, Monday morning and Thursday evening triathlon swimming sessions.

    Started out 3 years ago from exactly the same place as you, was in the top 25% of swimmers in Dublin half Ironman this year. Not much of an achievement in comparison to some of the contributors here.

    Swimming take a lot of work, be prepared for this, min 2hr each week. But it is worth it.

    Learning to swim / improving as a beginner required dedication and hard work. When you start make sure you keep at it. Try and get into the pool 3-4 times a week. Get involved in a club or a beginners group. You will have more bad days than good ones starting off but stick at it.

    I would not worry to much what lessons as long as they are good.
    also you wont need many and you are much better off joining a swim group squad club or whater, and then maybe add a few sessions with the coach of the club squad etc . its a long process over 2 -3 years for many.
    to find somebody spend some time in your pool and see who of the instructures are really engaged in their work and have a positive body language, thats the one i would go for .
    and be fair while most pools have many horrible swim teacher,instructurs etc, there is usually a good one too , They come in all shapes sizes genders and ages but its always a pleasure to watch those.
    i recently saw a short report about a german swim instructer aged 100 he was class, started swim coaching when he was 63 ;-)
