Can't get aerial to pick up free channels

EDIT: I originally had a completely different problem which has since been resolved!

However, it looks like I've picked up the Saorview channels but nothing else, and also no HD channels. Is there a way to get RTE 2 in HD - or is this even a channel?

I can't seem to figure out how to pick up freesat channels from UK. I had read that it's possible to pick up BBC/Channel 4 etc., but no sign of them when I scan?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Not familiar with that tv, but, it sounds like you're doing a scan for sat channels.

See if you can find a setting for terrestrial tv.
Also, what type of aerial are you using ?
Is any other tv in the house able to get s tv signal with that aerial?

    Edit...

Ok you're using an indoor aerial.

Are you in a high signal area ?
Can any other tv pick up a signal in your house with that same aerial?

You might need an external aerial.

Edited my OP as I didn't think anyone had seen it - thanks for your reply. You're right on all counts.

I am based in central/north Dublin (Drumcondra area), not sure if that qualifies as a high signal area.

I've managed to pick up the Saorview channels, but no UK freesat channels or HD channels.

RTE 1 & 2 are HD-only on Saorview, & if you want free UK channels where you are, you'll need a satellite dish & tuner.

If you wish to receive Satellite channels (Freesat, Free to Air Satellite or Sky encrypted channels) you need a Satellite dish and suitable tuners.

If you mean Freeview (UK Terrestrial) and not Freesat, then you need a specific aerial and also need to be in an area where those signal can be received ....... near the border for instance to pick up the N.I. transmissions.

Some on the east coast can pick up signals from Wales using a suitable aerial.

I may be wrong but I'd have thought you would need a satellite dish to pick up freesat? I doubt the UK channels are broadcasting to a level where you can pick up with an aerial in Dublin. Analogue was a very different story.

OK, so it looks like I can only get Saorview standard definition with an indoor aerial. That's disappointing, but I'll have to make do. I'm renting and it would be way too much hassle to ask the landlord to install a satellite dish.

    Thanks for all the replies!

RTE 1 & 2 are HD on Saorview, there are no SD versions (Well, apart from RTE1 +1). All other channels are SD though.

+1 I get RTE1+2 in HD on Saorview with an indoor aerial, Dun Laoghaire area.

You need to scan two terrestrial frequencies from your nearest transmitter to receive the full range of Saorview channels.

Did you do this job on your own TV yet?

Do you have the full range of Saorview radio channels from RTÉ? You should get 9 of them in total.

To only scan one frequency, you would need to know which UHF channel, then convert that to a frequency and anyone with the technical knowledge to find the channel number and do the conversion already knows that every Saorview signal involves two channels/MUXs.

So it's not realistic to think that anyone will attempt to tune their TV by manually inputting a single frequency or UHF channel number.
