I enjoyed his collaborations with Larry Niven (Footfall, Mote in God's Eye etc) and his standalone works.

"American science fiction writer, essayist, and journalist who contributed for many years to the computer magazine Byte. Pournelle served as President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1973"

I saw the news this morning. He'd not been well for some time, and never fully recovered from a stroke a few years ago. The Mote in God's Eye should be required reading for an SF fan, along with its sequel The Gripping Hand (a.k.a. The Moat around Murcheson's Eye). Pournelle's politics, on the other hand ... hoo, boy!

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.
