Bike wanted for Student

Young fella going off to college, looking for a bike. I am working on the assumption it will get nicked or lost so looking for something in the reliable beater category (or can be made reliable without too much spend ). 
Needs to fit height around 5ft 9. Hybrid or road bike style.

Dublin work,Meath evenings.
Budget wise pretty tight say 150.

Another option to explore is your LBS - they generally have a shed-load (literally..) of BSO's that they take in trade-in and cannot put in the shop and may be prepared to sell you 'off-book' ie offering no warranty whatsoever.
