    Hi,
Sorry to bring up an old thread but... I have an 08 Passat 1.4 tsi and an indy wants about 750 to replace the chain that has stretched; engine warning light on and rough idle and codes point to the chain needing replacing. There is an issue with the timing being out on camshaft - I don't know car engines at all unfortunately.
Main Dealer offer is coming up with 449 for the same job and replacing the water pump https://www.volkswagen.ie/en/service-and-accessories/offers.html , has anyone done this recently or would it be a case of they will add more to this figure if I gave the car to them?

The main dealer price you are showing there is for a timing belt replacement not a timing chain. Your car has a timing chain. What exactly is the Indy doing for €750? It wouldn't be much more in a main dealer at that rate tbh.

That link is for timing belt not chain. I paid around the 750 with water pump from an indy was best price I could get.

Would expect main dealer to be considerably more.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't notice that, I knew it had a chain. On the VW website it asks for the reg and then when I confirm my car it gives the different options and gives 449 as "replace timing belt with pump" option. Thought I was getting a better deal alright.
Does it also have a timing belt and that's why it has the option? Please forgive my ignorance.
The indy has timing chain kit €250, coolant €20, consumables €15, spark plugs €60 (needs them separately as left off the most recent service), labour €350 for sparks and chain. Total 695 +vat

Yeah, all that VW website does with your reg is determine if your car is under or over 2.0 as that is the point where they split the prices.

Your car has no timing belt, just a chain.

That seems ok from the Indy, sometimes these engines can need the cam variator changed at the same time which can be ~€400 ish so keep that in the back of your mind. It's something that should be checked while doing the job as if not you will have the same symptoms after replacing the chain.

Thanks, I'll say it to them when I book it in. VW website no use so really outside of booking in a service.
