buying privately in Northern Ireland

    Hi,

In the market for a reasonably priced used car as a second run around. Low mileage needs so petrol would probably make the most sense.

With the exchange rate - Northern Ireland is certainly an appealing market.

Has anyone bought privately up there? I'm sure many have bought from dealers but I see one particular car that looks very well cared for that is for sale privately at a good price. Even with VRT and exchange rate it's about 60 - 65% of similar cars for sale down here. I see the Q&A above explicitly states never to buy privately but I can't imagine that nobody has ever done so.

If anyone here has - what sort of checklist/process/procedure did they follow? I wouldn't like to be going up there with cash - would prefer a draft.

    Any advice/guidance would be appreciated..

    Thanks

The rules for buying privately are pretty much universal and not really governed by geography. Apply the same careful logic and caution as if you were buying privately down here. The only difference will be the currency you use to pay so the process may take longer.

It's the exact same as buying privately in the south. Do all your pre-checks before buying and make sure before you buy the seller agrees to give you the V5C Form with the car. If they won't age insist on sending it to the DVLA then walk away as it's not worth the hassle.

I have bought several cars privately in NI and never had any problems, just be aware of what your buying, check the car out thoroughly and get the V5C.
