    I read that as meaning the fuel burn for the flight plan hadn't included a descent and ascent.

    I'm sure it could have done the calculation though if asked.

    Well the FMC normally understands a descent from cruising altitude to a few thousand feet as " entering the approach and landing phase".
    Some rough mental calcs could determine if you had the gas for such a manoeuvre and a return to cruise and land afterwards.

    Fair play to the Skipper though! 😄
