It's the Irish system for leaving cert students or anyone who applies to do the first year of any college they wish to go to. Just asking, how come you never heard of it before?

If you are familiar with the UK system the CAO is similar to UCAS. It's a central point for students to apply to university. If their leaving cert (like A level or Highers) grades are high enough they are accepted onto their first choice of course.

It's the Central Applications Office for Irish university/IT/college places. It means you put in one application and it covers all the courses you have chosen in different colleges.

It saves you having to apply to each college for each course. When the results are issued, they are automatically sent to the CAO and their computers determine who has the points for the course they chose and they issue offers.

It just makes things easier and fairer.
