Looking for pointers with regard to Munich. Couple in our 50's. Thinking about going there in and around the first week of December. Lucky to say that budget is very much on the flexible side of things. Never been to the city before so looking for advice as to the best area convenient to the sights and markets and the areas best to avoid. Thanks in advance.

Cracking city, been there loads of times.

Christmas markets will just be kicking.

Random list of place to visit
-English gardens, go for a beer and a sausage in the centre
-BMW museum is out by the Olympic park
-Go watch bayern (not cheap as some people think German football is automatically). 1860 is much cheaper but stadium will be near empty
-Marienplatz is the main square, similar every other European square
    -Some great bars
-Dacau (not quite as grim as Autschwitz but very interesting)

    All above accessible by metro

expect prices a tiny bit cheaper than Dublin

For a day trip, Go top Royal Castles of Neuschwanstein

just an update on the soccer, 1860 now play in the tiny Grunwalder stadium and are sold out for every game.
Anyhow, if on a couples weekend then likely the other half wouldn't want to see a game anyhow.

For staying, anywhere in town is convienent, but as theres the markets theres loads of tourists in town so anything central and half ways comfortable is an awful price. Prices peak as you get towards Marienplatz, but the area round the station is still only a short walk away.

If you check hrs.com (germanys largest hotel website) you can limit hotels to 4* , and then sort by distance to centre.
You'll see that anything downtown is 200 and above and anything outside of the immediate centre is far more reasonable

The ubahn runs till 1am on weekdays and after 2am at weekends so theres no massive need to stay in the city if you don't have to. Something like the K+K Haras or Pullman Munich are nice hotels with an underground on the doorstep but at a more reasonable price. They are a shade over 100 Euro but theres even 4* hotels like the Mercure in Neuperlach which is less again and would be a perfectly ok place too (albeit more an industrial area so not a place with many bars or restaurants nearby )

Dachau is on the S-Bahn but worth the trip. Will probably take up a half day. There's a Trappust Monastry there also with beer! Check out the Chinese Tower in the English Gardens. A favourite of mine is the Science museum. Killians Irish bar decent also for a beer and live music. Try and get to the Opera House for a show.

Hire a car (i got a great deal on 5-series), drive out to the BMW museum (there's an outlet village nearby as well (same company as Kildare Village).

Then drive out to the mountains. Enjoy some fantastic scenery and perhaps stay overnight.

the outlet village is nowhere near the BMW museum.
Its out in Ingolstadt, a different city altogether about 40 minute drive away, where Audi have their Headquarters.

If youre doing car related things then a spin down the road to Stuttgart to see the Mercedes and Porsche museums might be an idea.
Theres flights from Stuttgart to Ireland so you could fly into Munich and out of Stuttgart
