The pumps on these TDDI engines are matched to the ECU as part of the immobiliser system, which means you can't just fit a secondhand one and fire it up.

You need to get the secondhand pump virginised, any diesel injection specialist will be able to do this for you, or anyone with Bosch KTS diagnostic equipment. After that you just switch on the ignition and leave it for a few mins, the pump will then match itself to the ECU and the engine should start.
