Squeaking/grinding from gearstick

    Driving home today I notice a light squeaking/grinding noise from the gearstick when I move it. The car drives exactly as it did this morning and as it has since i've owned it.
    It happens in any gear, and neutral, whether the car is running or not. It doesn't feel like gears on gears, it feels and sounds more like plastics rubbing off eachother, or a squeaky floorboard.

    Get a can of silicon spray and pop off that gaitor.
    Might give you a better idea of what's squeaking.
    Give a spray around in there anyway.

    I had a looky down there and not sure how much I can really grease up. I've no silicon spray on me (only WD40 or 3-in-1 atm) so I dont fancy that.
    If I was to blame anything (from the pic below), it'd be that wound up metal bar/spring on the left hand side rubbing (ie. needs grease), but that'd only explain the noise from lateral movement, not longitudinal (unless a similar spring for the longitudinal movement needs grease at the exact same time).
