Given the upcoming anniversary of the Russian Revolution which might overshadow this period, I am currently reading a biography of Gen. Allenby (by Lawrence James), who is famous for his capture of Jerusalem and being the ultimate CO of T.E. Lawrence. As well as giving an account of what Palestine was like a century ago, it also describes one of last great cavalry charges which was covered in the film The Lighthorsemen (1987).

My great-grandfather was in Palestine during the war. We have some souvenirs - a book of flowers of the region with descriptions in English, French and old Cyrillic. He was a baker, so not fighting but feeding the troops.
