For the past 7 years i have worked in a office complex (Caretaker) and have often thought about joining a union. The issue i have would be i am the only person employed by the people who own the building.

It is a multi tenant building.

No one ever knows wha't is around the corner, so my thinking would be if i joined a union and i had problems down the road then minimum i could get some advice.

    My questions would be.
Would it be worthwhile joining a union when i am the only employee in the building employed by the company that own the building?
Am i also right in thinking employers have no obligation to talk or deal with unions?

    Any advice would be appreciated

Don't bother. After 30 years' membership my union negotiated a halving of my mileage rate.

There's no harm in looking into it, they can take individual issues anyway, and are better versed at employment issues than a lot of solicitors because they use the system so much. Best to join before something happens. Going by your user name, SIPTU run a drop in centre in Connolly Hall in Cork no harm to drop in and assess your options.
