    can you still tow large trailers behind vans or do you need a 4x4, i tow with my 04 mercedes 311 cdi and its tows better than any 4x4.

    Aslong as its within the gtw of the vehicle towing with the correct (eb) licence you should be fine

    Yes you can, its all based on the rated tow capacity of the vehicle, not the vehicle type, number of axles on the trailers, size of trailer etc...
