    Hi there,

I am currently seeking information on how to register with the education board so that I can aid and help children with autism. I hold a level 8 BA Hons Degree in Early Childhood studies. Any information would be great please. I was recently talking to a girl on holidays who is in the same boat as me and I meant to get the link from her but totally forgot. Thanks, Vicki 😊

In what way do you want to work wit them?
    Teaching? ASD unit? SNA?

Hi there, I am not sure yet but as far as this girl was telling me I need to be registered anyway so I am just finding it hard to find out where or how to register. She like me has the level 8 and told me that i can automatically register. She works with autistic children in her own times, doing maybe 20 hours a week that works for her, the child and the childs family.

    Thanks,
    Vicki

Does she have a teaching qualification?
I think this maybe what she meant?

No, I do not have a teaching qualification but I have been told in some cases they accept a level 7 which is why I am enquiring as I have a level 8. Thank you.

You have to register as a tutor with the Teaching Council. With this teaching council number you can do July provision (tutoring children on the spectrum for up to 20 hours per weeks in July). I think it entitles you to become a home tutor aswell and you can tutor children in their homes from age 3 and up. Some parents may require you accompany their child to preschool or if the child is of a school going age and not ready to join a mainstream class or (any type of schooling) you can tutor them for up to 20 hours per week. You'd be best to contact the Teaching Council and ask them.

Maybe try contacting either of the following organisations who might be able to point you in the right direction

Within schools (ASD Units or Special Schools), there is no real difference in getting a job teaching autistic children to getting a teaching non-autistic children. To be a classroom teacher, you must be registered with the teaching council as a teacher. To be an SNA/Tutor, you need to get an SNA qualification etc.

I think OP is talking about home tuition. A certain number of home tuition hours are granted to younger ASD children before they get places in an ASD Unit or special school. There are also home tuition hours granted in July to ASD children where their school is not providing July provision within the school setting. Parents must advertise for a qualified teacher in the first instance, but can use a non-qualified teacher if they cannot find a qualified teacher to fulfil their home tuition hours. Generally parents will look for tutors with ASD experience or a psychology background (especially ABA - Applied Behaviour Analysis).

Teaching ASD children is quite a challenge. I'd check out fully that its what you want to do before taking steps in that direction.

Just to clarify there is no requirement for an SNA to have any qualifications.
Interesting I always thought to qualify for for the July you needed to be registered with the teaching council.

You do have to be qualified fully as a teacher and registered with the teaching council to do July provision!

    https://www.education.ie/en/Parents/Services/July-Provision/Home-Based-July-Provision-Information-Note.pdf

Section 7 states that tutors must be registered with the Teaching Council . However, if a qualified teacher cannot be sourced, a tutor with other relevant qualifications will be considered by the dept.

This is only the case for home provision, not school setting July Provision.
