Does anybody have any suggestions for an honest pre-NCT garage in Waterford?

    Thanks in advance.

My advice is not to bother, unless you know something is definitely wrong mechanically with your car it's cheaper to put it through the test and then fix whatever they fail you on. Otherwise you're likely to pay twice - the pre-test check (and whatever work the garage drums up from that) and then the test which you still might fail anyway.

Check your tyres are legal, check all the lights work, send car in for NCT, if it fails on anything else bring the fail sheet to a garage to fix those fails only.

Thanks, not sure why I have been conditioned to do these pre-NCT things, might give it a go as you suggest

I do - garages advertise this service as some sort of advantage all the time! People fall for it and tell each other that it a good idea so it becomes an orthodoxy

My wife brought her car to a mechanic to have the exhaust done before the nct and was told it needed work done to brakes, bushings and something else,
She put it thru regardless and it passed even with a broken taillight;)

Just get your car the yearly service before the Nct and send it in, then you won't fail and won't have the hassle of sending in for another Nct.

    Do you have a mechanic?
