Buying at auction in UK as private purchaser

Has anyone experience of buying at auction in the UK as a private buyer? Looking at something like a 2014 330d/335d/435d - there's any number for sale on the likes of autotrader/pistonheads. What sort of savings would you likely get through buying at auction?

I assume that the cars being sold are generally pretty tidy (albeit caveat emptor). Can you get previous sales results anywhere?
