Plastic waste

Saw kids today carrying bread to feed birds in one of those little plastic bags that they give out free in shops to contain small items - light, slithery white plastic. Why isn't this stuff banned?

And why don't we have paid returns on plastic bottles and aluminium cans like the Netherlands, Germany, Lithuania (I think), parts of Australia and most of Scandinavia?

There are dozens of petitions to the EU floating around the net to stop plastic waste polluting the sea and killing fish and birds and getting into the food chain. Ireland could show a lead as we did with smoking and large supermarket plastic bags. Time for action!

Here's a piece from last May about the possibility of such a scheme in Ireland https://www.thejournal.ie/bottles-deposit-plan-3367523-May2017/ and another from four years ago https://www.irishtimes.com/news/consumer/is-it-time-we-got-the-bottle-to-return-to-deposit-schemes-1.1430948

    and a couple of videos
