Depends on which pair are connected to the exchange, I moved my brothers socket some time ago, using a multimeter checked for 50V DC across the wires.

OK, in that case easiest way is to connect each pair of wires to L1/L2 and check for dial tone, incoming and outgoing calls with your mobile.

    The cable comes in 2 pairs orange/white & green/black.
Try orange & white into L1&L2 (one wire in each terminal)
Check if you have dial tone.
If not try green & black.
There is a test port in the phone socket to plug a phone into without having to re-connect the front faceplate.:):)

This will work in most cases, but if you have broadband only "eFibre" then you wont have a DT so you need to test with a modem (flashing DSL for more than 5 seconds = its working).

Have you tried all combinations? Test each wire with the others, when it was installed the technician may have used any two wires instead of sticking to pairs.

I have .I tried them previously. Two wires that are showing the piece of coil at end was the most obvious to me to start but no good.Could there have been damage done further back behind facet I wonder?

    Faulty socket or damaged wiring.

Do you have a small white telecoms box (ETU) on the external of the house or does the line come straight in undergroud or overhead from a pole or manhole to the master socket?

It is coming straight from telphone pole into master socket.

Why did you remove the socket? Was there any work done in the vicinity of the wiring? Check any visible wiring for damage, around bends, around clips securing wiring etc.

If nothing is obvious refit the wiring (the ones with the bend at the end) and socket and call it in as a fault.

Master socket, aka NTU 2001, could've been damaged, if so they'll just come and replace it.
