Hi all I lost my ipad air yesterday its either at Euston station, London or on a train that terminated at Crewe. Ive contacted lost property etc but no luck so far.

there was about 12% battery life left and it is password protected but no celluar on it. I've got the find my phone/ipad app activated and my phone number as a message to call if its switched on but its not come on line as yet.

I'm resigned to losing it but should I erase the contents using the Findmyphone app or just leave it. I'm thinking of leaving it a week or so on the remote possibility that its handed in.

My concern really is security can my emails be accessed and credit card details found.

    Any help appreciated.

I'd say it's safe enough if it's password protected. Did you use 4 or 6 digit passcode? Either way, it's fairly secure, but if it was me I'd probably remote wipe it straightaway anyway: if you get it back you can always restore it from a backup to get it back the way you had it.

I used a four digit password. I'm thinking of erasing but this will prevent knowing the location on the other hand even if i know the location its not much use to me.

If Find My iPad was enabled along with a passcode then your personal info including passwords etc should be safe. They won't be able to access them. Remote wipe is unlikely to work since they won't be able get through the passcode to connect to WiFi. They'll have to erase the device and then Apple will refuse to activate it without your Apple ID - this is called Activation Lock. They'll probably be able to jailbreak it and sell it to some unsuspecting fool but it won't be much use to them.

Find my ipad is enabled along with a pass code.

How does findmy ipad erase the data? will it only do it once the pass code is broken and the internet connected? Or can it erase if the ipad connects to the internet and the pass code is still unbroken.

Find My iPad can't work without a WiFi connection. And unless your passcode is very easy to guess, they won't be able to break it.
