THE LÉ WILLIAM Butler Yeats successfully located and rescued 117 migrants from a rubber craft 42 nautical miles (about 78km) northeast of Tripoli earlier today.

The ship became involved in the operation following a request from the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.

It also coordinated the rescue of a further 117 people by the MV Alexander Maersk.

Anybody that allows a newborn on a rubber dinghy need their head examined. Let the Irish ferries Mediterranean service continue. Also, sorry to the Italian people that our Navy has nothing better to do than transfer the economic migrants

8000 people have died in the med in the last few years. Some people think that isn't enough.

Probably should stop encouraging more to make the trip so. The more that get into Europe this way, the more that will be enticed into making the trip.

Many trying to enter Australia by boat these days?

    That's exactly what it is.
The traffickers know that all they need to do is put people on any auld floating yoke and send it vaguely north and those good welcoming Europeans will rescue them and take them in.
And so the human tide continues.

Its too many, stop bringing people across and the deaths will reduce significantly. Rescue people by all means but bring them back to the North African coast.

Some people seem to think it's Europe's fault.

They can't dock in Libya, people tend to forget this all of the time.

Also, if they stopped 'ferrying' people across, the people traffickers will call it a day, because they care about their charges? They will in their sh1te.

Its the only way to stop the deaths. The only other way is to just say to hell with borders/immigration laws and just send over ferries to collect anyone who wants to come to Europe.

Safe haven camps should be set up on the North African coast to bring these people back to, we don't know who these people are, I doubt they come with passports or valid passports like the rest of us have to use to get in and out of our own country/EU.
All the deaths are very sad, but bringing them to Europe is encouraging the situation causing the high death tolls.

Mod: Gonna nip this one in the bud...

There have been immigration threads in AH before and they have been an absolute disaster, so this one is going to close before it grows.

If you wish to discuss the politics behind immigration, you can post this in Politics or Politics Cafe (latter requires access). If you want to discuss the humanitarian aspect, you can discuss in Humanities. Whatever you decide, read the respective charters before posting.
