Watching Reeling in the Years, I was reminded how much happened during 1981 both in Ireland and abroad. I was only a young fella but I remember it distinctly.

    For example;
    • Hunger Strikers dying in NI - Bobby Sands the 1st of 10 to die.
    • Offaly in both All Ireland finals (winning the hurling)
    • Iran releases the US hostages
    • Pope shot
    • Reagan shot
    • Sadat shot and killed
    • Stardust
    • 1981 coalition FG/Lab government lasts just 8 months
    • 1st London marathon
    • 1st Space Shuttle flight
    • Hijack of Aer Lingus flight
    • Raiders of the Lost Ark in cinema
    • 1st woman in US Supreme Court
    • MTV launched
    • Simon & Garfunkel perform free Concert in Central Park
    • Indonesian passenger ship Tamponas capsizes, killing 580
    • Bucks Fizz wins European song content
    • 1st De Lorean car produced
    • Mark Chapman sentenced for 20 years
Sky News wouldn't have been able to cope!

What year did you find profound during your lifetime?

1993 - Lorena Bobbitt cut off John Wayne Bobbitt's penis and every male went "Ooof".

But other than that 1981 was a good year for news. And watching Ultravox's "Vienna" miss out in No. 1...which is still hard to figure.

A scandal that she wasn't jailed, too bad the evidence didn't stand up in court.

Still, led to one of the great jokes, about the old man and his grandchild in the car behind her...

The world seems like a scary place to a lot of people now because of news on demand.

Take my father for example. He's always saying there was no road accidents when he was growing up compared to now a days. He hadn't much interest in the news/it wasn't reported as much. He refuses to believe there were more deaths.

I still remember the footage of the incidents, which really brought one era to a close \ started another and sent out ripples which we are still living with today.

1989 ... Fall of the Berlin Wall
    2001 ... September 11th

(I wasn't around for the end of World War II, Cuban Missile Crisis, the assassination of JFK, or Apollo moon mission or start of the Troubles)

"To follow knowledge like a sinking star..." (Tennyson's Ulysses)

Very hard to figure since it was kept from the No 1 spot by Joe Dolce's Shaddap you Face. A travesty !!

    1999.

Missed the FA Cup semi final replay at Villa Park as we took delivery of our first (to be adopted) child.

Then missed the final league game of the season when Beckam and Cole scored to clinch the first leg of the treble as I had to head off to a family event.

Was at Wembley a week later and Barcelona the Wednesday after that though. 6 incredible weeks in an incredible year

    1946 ?
Partisans fought on in the Eastern European countries and the Greeks were fighting until '49.

1981 will go down in history, and be forever remembered, as the year Santy brought me a Stretch Armstrong.
