Endodentist Prices to complete RCT

Hi all, I haven't seen this question asked before and I'm not sure if it's a special case.

I had a root canal started by my own dentist (Bottom right, closest to the premolar) who removed the 4 nerves on the first visit. On the second visit while preparing the canals a file broke and she said that given the curvature of the roots that instead of completing the procedure she'd refer me to an endodontist. (I was charged €150 for the work by my dentist)

Now the endodontist I've been referred to said it would be €850 as they'd have to do a lot of the work again- does anyone know if this sounds correct? The first part of the procedure was successful and all the nerves were removed so I had thought it would just be the second part of preparing the canals, the price seems expensive for a single visit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I have no real knowledge of this area.

Yes a step in the root canal procedure has been done but no endodontist will carry-on on the basis that it is cleaned and shaped to his/her standards... They will do it again step by step....
There is also the extra job of file removal which I believe can be tricky and time consuming....

No issue with the endodontists doing what they have to do - but why did you have to pay €150 for an unsuccessful treatment including the broken file? Surely the curvature should have been reasonably clear from the X-Rays?

Root canal treatment is done in two stages. The first is to remove the infected/inflamed nerve and relieve pain. The canals are dressed with an antibiotic paste to clear the infection. The second stage, which have in this case been referred for, typically proceeds 2-4 weeks later when the surrounding tissues have healed. You were charged for the first stage and referred for the second. The nerve was successfully removed. Very few medical procedures are done without visual access, root canal treatment is one of them, that is why they are so difficult, time consuming and costly. As a dentist, I would much prefer to do any other treatment than a root canal but I have to do them to relieve pain.

First visit complete- really impressed with endodontist, had I known probably would have gone this route from day 1.

I am glad you can see where the extra money goes.
