Focus with no power, turbo gone?

My folks have a 2010 Focus estate 1.6 tdci. They've had it serviced on schedule. I noticed a total lack of power on acceleration, which there had been previously (months ago last time I drove it).

Is this a known issue? I read something about wrong type of oil causing issues.

What's the cost of repair for this typically?

It's impossible to tell how much it will cost to repair as the symptoms could be caused by any one or more issues. Those engines can and do give their fair share of problems but it may not be as serious as the turbo which you would know about. You'll need to bring the car to a mechanic to have the car looked at and hopefully properly diagnosed. Any warning lights on the dash would generate a fault code that would need to be read by someone with a diagnostic computer and this may point to where the issue is.

cylinder not firing, could be any host of causes with a range of costs.
Best to go to a trusty mechanic.

    Total lack of power?

The first think I would check is the the DPF filter via a scan tool to check the internal pressure. too high a pressure = blocked.

Secondly, I'd query a possible boost leak, could be a leaking pipe/intercooler. Easiest way I found this was to remove the air duct from filter going into the turbo and block it off (eg a rubber glove) and remove the turbo pressure sensor and manually pressurise the ducting via this port with an air blower, a leak would be very quick to find.

Thirdly I'd manually check the turbo system. There are 4 parts to it - check the play of the spindle, the variable geometry mechanism, the actuator and the vacuum solenoid

Yes, pulling the injectors and having them checked should be the very first step before anything else. :p

This issue has been diagnosed as a blocked DPF, good call mullingar! I never would have thought a DPF issue would have these symptoms.

If they are doing a lot of short stop/start journeys then that will contribute to the DPF getting blocked. That sort of driving is not really what diesel cars are designed for.
