I was paying the vrt today and I was told I would need to pay a small bit extra as the car was out of uk tax since end of june. Has anyone ever heard of this? I thought UK tax would be irrelevant.

How much extra? Did you query why and how you should be liable for sonething that is not under your control? I'd also be asking why Revenue feel they should profit from non payment of tax in another country!

If you have no proof of shipping they take the last date of taxation in the U.K. as the date it left the country. Afaik.
