What salary to ask for?

A question I always hate and see on many jobs is "salary expectations" I recently applied for a job as "personal sales advisor" with aib. No from what i've seen between 22-25k is average for this so it's what I put down. But now i'm getting a lot of grief from people for not saying around 30k? Now I don't have any degrees so i'm fairly desperate for work that I can progress from the inside and do the exams they have rather then give up a salary and go back to college or else do online one's in my spare time. Have I lowballed myself here? the job is fairly far out for me and i'm currently working 2 jobs that i'd give up to take this. But they seem to be recruting a fair amount of people for this position, so i'd imagine i'd get the industry average or at least what others starting at the same time will receive?

    Any input would be appreciated.

Most grads are paid the same at the start. They probably have a set rate they budget before recruiting, maybe plus 2 or 3k if you're exceptional or you have an offer from another bank. Wouldn't worry too much about it. If you're good you'll get a raise before long

Your salary expectation doesn't matter a lot as you'll get what is commensurate with your level of experience and the range for the role. However if you do perform well then the doors will open quickly to getting a higher salary ( though not necessarily with the same employer ).

I think you were right to pitch that expectation rather than 30k. I know a young lad working in customer accounts who started off with a leaving cert on 18k and was on 40k within 3 years, he's only 23 years old.

If they interview you tell them you are 100% committed to doing the QFA exams in the order that AIB reckon would be most beneficial.

To sell financial stuff you need to be an accredited product advisor ......

After Regulation and 5 more you are a QFA.

€22k-€25k is what most new starts in banks start out on. €30k is starting in some banks for those who have gotten the QFA.......you said correct...the people giving you grief obviously arent familiar with bank salary levels

Sorry for the Delay, thanks for the responses. Nothing new on this front, passed the first assesment, did the video interview and waiting to hear back on that.
