Physical Internet Install

    Evening all,

Will try to be as brief as I can.
    • Currently connected to Eir and are moving to a new build in country side. Eir have told me there is Hi Speed Fibre in the area, but I doubt it VERY much, though there is 2 live fibre boxes in the village (according to Eir's broadband map) about a 4 minute drive away.
    • Have spoken to Eir and organised a service move.
    • An older telephone line runs at front of property. Have no doubt this is a legacy line probably installed many years ago.
    • The house is approx. 160m from this line. Despite me telling Eir this fact and that KN would probably need to come take a look first, they appeared to continue to think this was an easy install and would be just simply bringing the line to the house.
Has anyone any idea of how a more complex install like this would work?
Would there be any point in pulling conduit to the gate and see if they could pull their line from there.
Anything I could look for on the drive out of the village or on the two poles at the front of the property that hold the telephone line to see where they might have to go to get us connected? If at all! And could pull conduit to there?
Any way of contacting the KN guys and giving them a chance to take a look first and then let us know what we can do on the property to help.
The install date is 18th September so have a bit of time yet.

    Thanks all.

Are there poles between the public roadway and the house or is that a completely "barren" area?

Is this a new build in the country or second hand? The latter I assume as new builds require telephone ducting to the line on the road.

If the house has never had a telephone line installed previously they will run it overhead and at 160m from the line I assume they will have to provide 2 poles (50m spacing).

The line appears to come from the village I mentioned. This is a brand new build. We already have an ESB line crossing the property so would prefer to run it underground if possible.

So a new build with no ducting run, is there a small white box for the telephone connection on the external of the house

Regarding ducting to the main line, the requirement is 37mm I.D. (1½" heavy guage) hydrodare or 50mm PVC.

Yeah box installed just don't know where to head with conduit from the box so they can get it comnected

And no red or black conduit running into the box, some builders use a "hockey stick" duct to the box similar to the ESB line - https://www.goodwins.ie/products/50mm-red-esb-ducting-hockey-stick-0031346.html

My suggestion would be to run the ducting to the nearest pole on the line, preferably one with a junction box if that is possible.

If you wait the KNN lad will come out and defer the install after telling you what they want. Better off finding out if theres a pair available before you do a chunk of work yourself.

Yeah we'll be doing the work ourselves regarding conduit but that's the issue dont know what direction to go in. If KN guy will do an assessment and come back that be perfect.

How far are you from the exchange as the copper line runs?

Hi-speed FTTC/VDSL is distance limited to 2km from the exchange, ADSL1 or 2+ beyond that with speeds up to 8 or 24 Mbps (close to the exchange), decreasing with distance.

    FTTV/VDSL speed vs. distance

2km's from the two fiber boxes in the village according to Eir's maps. The closest Exchange is 6km away but is only earmarked to be fiber ready within 1 year, which is 2029 probably!!

This is closest box, I may even be wrong in trusting Eir's map. Is this actually a Fiber box?

No, telephone line cabinet. Fibre cabinet (FTTC/VDSL) on the right in this pic.

What is your local exchange? Might help when giving specific advice

So is the Eir map full of crap then if this is actually a standard telephone cabinet rather than a Fibre cabinet????

    https://www.eir.ie/broadband/coverage-map/

Attached is from the Eir Fibre coverage map, the local village I mentioned was Castletown, the closest Exchange is Coolrain. So obviously those 2 boxes are not Fibre boxes then? So why is Eir claiming they are? Or was I mistaken in thinking they were based on what the map was showing me?

According to Eir Rural Exchange Timeline the proposed date is "Second Half of 2018" but we are 6kms from that Exchange so probably won't make a bit of difference to us.

Its funny, I've spoken to Eir sales and they've basically guaranteed me that there is "high speed" Fibre in the area. The girl actually said "the very fast Fibre" which I thought was hilarious. But having a dug a little and used Eircodes on their own search sites, these are telling me sorry there's no Fibre in your area.

What a mess. I guess its time to look for Wi-Fi providers in the area then and back to ****ty 56k connections speeds  !

Avoid the eir retail map, as advised here on the forum for a long time, may not be up to date/accurate.

Use http://www.openeir.ie/Our_Network/ , click on NGA Fibre Broadband Network to get a more up to date map, click on exchange status to the right.

Looking at Castletown, the 2 fibre cabs are indicating as live, they are fibre connected back to the Mountrath exchange.

Coolrain is a separate exchange to the Mountrath/Castletown exchange area, no fibre service there yet, either FTTC or FTTH, late 2018 it appears for live fibre services.
Also according to http://irelandoffline.org/map/#/home the Coolrain exchange isn't even ADSL enabled.

Which exchange is your line connected to, Mountrath or Coolrain?

Too late now clearly but this is the kinda research that one should do before setting up to move (unless you're a luddite).

By your description it doesnt really matter which MDF its off the line will be worthless for data. Imagine or Three will probably be the next to investigate.

Unfortunately I have no idea Cush. I can try to trace the lines tonight as we drive out and see what direction they go in. Via road we would be closer to Mountrath exchange.

Go to this map, drop the marker on the house and tick "Exchange Area". It should show you which one you are in.

If, as ED E suspects, you are SOOL for any DSL solution, you can also use that map to check for Wireless operators in the area (tick the Wireless ISPs option).

Thank you IP. It turns out we're in the 6km away exchange, I was pretty sure we were always going to be out of luck. Not to worry. And definitely not a Luddite EdE the whole south facing portion of the site has pretfect line of site in about 50km every direction we'd already researched this and had confirmed a few Wi-Fi options which we knew we'd have if fixed line failed. Always have a plan!

    Thanks everyone.

Sorry if that was unclear, not calling you a luddite, just saying everyone but them cannot live a disconnected life.
