1.9TDI v 1.6TDI - Which to choose?

Currently looking to buy a new car and I've two in mind.

    - 2009 Audi A3 1.9tdi
    - 2010 Volkswagen Golf 1.6tdi

I haven't viewed any cars yet but I will be looking around over the weekend and I am hoping to have something bought by the end of next week. From looking online these are my two favorite's.

Can anyone tell me which would be the better of the two to go for? Both are the same price, similar spec, but different engines. I currently have a mk5 Golf 1.9tdi and I'm thinking that the 1.6tdi may be very under-powered compared to it?

Or if anyone has any suggestions on any other cars I should think about, saloon or hatchback! Unfortunately I cannot get insured on any car above 2ltr so 1.9 is the max.

Check the engine code on the 1.9

BXE is the one to avoid if I remember correctly. I think a lot of the 08/09 engines have them so it may rule out the Audi already.

    2.0tdi golf 140bhp one.

The 1.6tdi suffers chronic egr problems, injector issues are common enough, dpf issues and some of the 5 speed gearboxes are starting to give bearing problems.

The 2.0tdi can suffer all these issues but they seem to suffer them with less regularity.

The 1.9 bxe should be forgotten about.

The 1.9tdi Audi has the BLS engine code so I am planning on viewing that early next week.

Would you say to avoid the 1.6tdi Golf altogether so?

The bls isnt immune to putting a rod out through the block either unfortunately. Now some have plenty of miles on bxe & bls engines with no issues but quite a few have had them fail out of the blue and left with no other option only to replace the engine.

The 1.6tdi isn't too bad bar the issues mentioned above and quite a few of them can be solve by simply blanking off most of the emissions sh1te and getting a remap but that's a controversial topic on here ;) the 1.6tdi is fine in comparison to the 105bhp 1.9 tdi you may have to use the gears a bit more to get the best of it but it's adequate. (They've a very long 5th gear)

Insurance definitely a no go on the 2.0? Even a 110bhp one?

As a matter of interest does it have to be a tdi vag hatchback?

A friend of mine has the 1.6 and got it remapped, I must ask them how they find it. They got it done a year ago and they still have the car and it seems to be going grand for them.

Seemingly so with the insurance, I've tried getting quotes for a Volvo S40 & C30, Ford Focus & Mondeo, and a VW Passat & Golf (all 2.0) and they are refusing to give me a quote. Surprising as the same insurer has insured me with a 1.9 over the last 3 years no problem with very cheap renewals.

Doesn't have to be a vag, open to any suggestions either hatch or saloon! Just once it's nicely spec'd and comfortable.

Have you shopped around the different insurance companies rather than just staying with your current one?

Update on this.. I got the reg of a random 09 Golf 2.0tdi 110bhp, called my insurer and I they would cover me on that car (although I will have to pay a couple of hundred to change).

    So now the options are;
    2009 Audi A3 1.9tdi 105bhp
    2009/10 VW Golf mk6 1.6tdi 105bhp(?)
    2009/10 VW Golf mk6 2.0tdi 110bhp

We had a 08 VW golf 1.9 TDI 105 and a 141 VW golf 1.6 TDI 105 at the same time in the family, both 5 speed gearboxes. We both rated the 1.9 as the better engine. It definitely felt more powerful and more responsive. However the 1.6 tdi was definitely quieter.

Narrower powerband in the 1.6tdi and they are very lethargic before they come on boost or if you're in the wrong gear. They're grand once kept in their powerband though.

Regarding the op there's very little between the 2 golfs I'd personally pick the 2.0tdi 110bhp but only if the example I was getting was as clean if not cleaner than the corresponding 1.6tdi's definitely don't just get a 2.0 because of engine alone. service history, mileage, timing belt and clutch & flywheel are all important considerations to acknowledge.

And definitely see if you can work a 2.0tdi 140bhp one on the insurance the extra power with a 6 speed box makes a big difference.
