Say someone pulls off a 7 grand fraud in the uK and gets caught, how does the judge decide how much he time he should serve?

The UK (and Ireland) works off a "Common Law" approach where sentences are determined by what was previously given to people convicted of the same crime.

For example if you stole a car and got 1 year in prison and I then stole a car the judge would only be able to punish me accordingly and give a similar sentence.

This is different to other countries such as Spain who work off "Civil Law" where a judge can give any sentence they see fit.
