What a devastating time Houston, Texas and the surrounding area is going through with the severe flooding from (now former) Hurricane Harvey. It is heartening to see the efforts made by neighbours helping neighbours and anyone with a boat signing up to help the response efforts. The local volunteer coordination organisation set up a Virtual Volunteer Reception Centre. There were calls for registered nurses, medical professionals and social workers. Obviously this storm is an all hands on deck moment for Houston and the surrounding area, there could be learning for all places around the world on coordinating volunteers and how best to mobilise local people who can help others in their area that is difficult for first responders to get to quickly. Volunteers from outside the area should go through official channels. The loss of life is tragic and the disruption to peoples lives and destruction of peoples homes and cars etc. is a disaster that will take years to recover from. This historic event will be etched in peoples minds with physcal and mental health needs for some time to come. Imagine for a moment that your home was flooded necessitating practically everyting beneath the water line needing to be dumped. The US is capable to dealing with this in as much as any country could deal with it, but community spirit will be needed long into the future.
