Unregistered rental contract

    Hi,
I'm a EU citizen and I got a job here in Ireland.

I'm looking for a flat for rent and I found a good one for a reasonable price.

The landlord doesn't want to register the contract with RTB and wants only cash payments every month.

Is it safe to accept that condition? Is there a way to protect myself?

    Potential reasons for this:

    1. Dodging Revenue (paying tax)
    2. Dodging estranged Wife/Husband
    3. Dodging the Bank

If its the latter, I'd avoid. But you can't know which it is, so generally avoid it. Unfortunately this market wont give you many options.

As a landlord, Id go one further and report the address to the RTB.

Registered or not, you are still protected by law and you can still lodge a dispute with the RTB.

Cash is fine, as long as you get a receipt and a rent book.
