Steering rack Grande Punto

Think the steering rack is going in my grande punto. Was parked up for a couple of days, got in and turn the wheel there was a knocking noise. It has progressively gotten worse over the last couple of days. Its parked up now until I can get it looked at properly. I'm guessing it's a the steering rack as the knocking is only there when the wheels being turned and I know it's a common fault. No other symptoms just the knocking sound, steering feels fine, no power steering fluid leak that I can see.

Two questions: my regular mechanic lives about 30 miles away, is it safe to drive it out or what's the story?

Any idea what the damage is going to be?

Could be lots of things - ball joints etc?

Very common. Call the Fiat garage and as if your car qualifies for a recall, there might be one as it is safety related fault.

Could be a broken coil spring.

Cheers lads, actually ended up being a broken shock mount, so a lot cheaper at the end of the day.
