I'm looking at buying an old set of irons, 704cb's. Googling them shows they are non conforming after 2010 groove rule. Does this apply to a hacker like meself or only elite players?

    Thanks in advance

Shouldn't be an issue to be honest!

No, it applies to you. Equipment must conform.

Is it likely that the cross-section of the grooving will make a material difference to a hacker's game? Probably not, but the requirement is pretty clear and absolute with no exceptions.

Groove rule only affects elite amateur events (and professional, obviously). Your average hacker wont be obliged to conform to the rule until 2024 or 2025.

I was wrong and @Benicetomonty is correct - the ruling doesn't apply to amateurs below the elite level until 2024 at the earliest - this date may be extended when the matter is reviewed in 2020.
