Hi guys, I'm wondering if somebody can confirm that If I was to import a 2013(131) and register it with a Tipperary South address.. would it be on the old style plate with TS as opposed to T? Thanks a mill.

    I would assume T reg.

    You'll get 131-TS-xxxx

    The "T" reg's didn't come in until 2014.

Ohh right. I would still assume it goes on current laws as T is the current reg for all off Tipperary and besides the T looks much better than the old way.

Nope. You'll get a TS REG

No, T reg only applies to 2014 cars and onward otherwise you would have TS, TN and T in the same year which is pointless and just confusing.

Me too - single letter for City Councils, 2 letters for County Councils. Why is Tipp a special case now?

I would have thought it would be a T registration.

The reason TS and TN disappeared is that they were originally two separate county councils and therefore they had different registration letters (originally HI and FI).

Since they are now one county it must be "T" since TN and TS now are meaningless.

Yeah, but to be fair, they're keeping it consistent. It will be TS as the car is older than the changeover date.

If they used T it would definitely identify an import, possibly a bit unfairly.

Do we have a definitive answer from anyone, is Murt102 in the know?

Where a vehicle has been first brought into use in another country of origin and prior to the 1st of January 2014, and then subsequently is imported and registered here in Ireland after 1st January 2014, the current registration plates TS, TN, L, LK, W, and WD will continue to be used for these pre-2014 imported vehicles, thus maintaining the integrity of the present numbering system in place for all years prior to 2014.

There is no point in registering a pre 2014 car with a T reg as there is already a TS and TN for those years, introducing a T would just add to the confusion and overkill. That is why they draw a line with one letter going forward from 2014.

And the reason for the old TS and TN reg and other counties that had multi registration letters was because originally revenue from motor tax was directly allocated to the council where the car was originally registered and some counties had more than one council. However these days revenue from motor tax is put into a centralized pot and distributed out differently.

Thanks for the replies, lads. I gather anything before 2014 will be TS which is what I wanted to hear.

Another question, if the car was imported this month or next what numbers do the imports start on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,645 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

If it's post 2011 then I think it just gets the next available number. If pre 2011 then it will get the next available high number available to imports.

There's no special high reg numbers for imports of 2013 cars, so whatever's next. 131TS1560 is where they are at the moment.

They didn't care about making 2nd hand imports easily identifiable by using 120xxx for Dublin for several years, I'm sure if I was from other counties I'd know the reg imports got.

But I don't see an issue making imports identifiable, because if I look at any vehicle on our roads I know that it's an import ;)

Does anyone know the answer to this - I imported a 2012 Volvo and registered in April but instead of getting a 12-D-12**** as expected I was issued 12-D-51***.

I was pleased with that as it looks less obviously like a grey import, but how did this reg come to be available? Was it previously attached to another vehicle, now destroyed or exported? That part concerns me slightly

    It's because it's a 2012 car.

You miss my point. Instead of getting one of those hold back numbers like 12-D-123456 I got a number I would have expected to be issued and on the road already since 2012, similar to 12-D-51123

The 12D123xxx numbers don't apply to 2012 cars.

How do you know that? Can you tell me how high 172 WX is? I'm awaiting delivery of my new car and I wonder will it be over the 1000, thanks.
